Every country has something specific, something that is recognized worldwide. Today we meet you with the weird and fun facts and things that you can see, eat or do ONLY IN CYPRUS 🙂
- The island of Cyprus is divided into two parts – Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (which is ruled by the Turks and is also known as the Occupied Cyprus) and the Independent Republic of Cyprus (which is ruled by the Greeks). It is interesting that only, greek part of Cyprus is in the European Union.
- Besides island is being divided into two parts, the capital city Nicosia-Lefkosa is divided too. So that walking carefree one of the most popular street of Nicosia, like Ledra street, you’d run to the boundary! If you want to continue you will have to have a documents with you.
- On the Turkish side you can bargain and you can get a lower price, but the probability that you will get the bill is straight 0. The Greek side seller’s will suddenly, without notice, and any long stories offer a discount which will of course go through the cash register!
- When you meet someone you they will tell you whether it is Turkish Cypriot or Greek Cypriot. Do not guess, let them declare alone, and then do not mention the other side unless you want to listen bad things about it…
- What language is concerned – everyone knows Greek and Turkish and English, however, due to various political and religious divisions, each speaking their own language.
- The most popular holiday in Cyprus is Easter.
- The national symbol of the island is the Cyprus mouflon, but you probably never see it, because they are very fearful and shy animals that are hiding from the people. However, regardless of the mouflon, which for years trying to save from extinction, everywhere you look you will see donkeys ?!
- For Cypriot dessert wine say that is oldest in the world, 5000 years old!
- Cyprus is the island of love, at least for the legend that says that’s near Paphos Aphrodite surfaced. Now these famous Aphrodite Aphrodite’s rocks and beach have become a popular tourist attraction. Yet history suggests that Digenis Akritas only threw stones at opponents and that because or thanks to him those rocks (large stones) are in the sea!
- CHEESE Halloumi – made from goat and / or cow’s milk. It is like rubber (literally barely chew and not looks spectacular by the smell and the taste), that’s why they grill and fry it. It is served almost everywhere on the island (even McDonald’s has it, but only in Cyprus, of course). Mostly they eat halloumi for breakfast. Halloumi goes with salad, bread, olive oil … But also with fresh jam! Unbelievable but true – it is delicious!
